Dot-Peen Marking and Repainting Metal Parts: Plan the Sequence Before the Finish

A permanent dot-peen mark and a durable painted finish can pull a job in different directions. The pin creates an indentation in the metal, while paint and powder coatings are intended to protect and cover the surface. A workshop deciding when to mark must consider whether the mark will remain readable after finishing, whether a coating will be broken by a later operation, and whether the customer has authorised direct marking at all.

Three sequences, three different risks

Mark before painting: the substrate is accessible, so an approved indentation may be made without cutting through an existing protective coating. The finishing process can subsequently fill or obscure the characters. Do not assume a mark that reads well on bare metal will remain legible under primer and topcoat. Test the actual coating system and inspect after cure.

Mark after painting: a pin can damage the coating, expose bare metal and produce chipped or ragged edges. That may be unacceptable for corrosion resistance, cleanliness, appearance or warranty. Do not improvise a paint touch-up around a production identification mark without the coating specification owner's approval.

Mark a separate plate: a metal tag can be marked in a controlled fixture and installed after finishing, provided the mounting is approved and does not interfere with function. For many painted structures this is the least disruptive route, although it introduces a separate part and fixing inspection.

Who decides whether direct marking is permitted?

The equipment owner or responsible engineer should define the authorised marking area, permitted indentation, minimum remaining section, corrosion treatment and inspection method. A fabricator's convenience is not an engineering approval. Do not mark structural chassis members, pressure-retaining parts, lifting components or safety-critical areas simply because the pin can reach them. Where a vehicle identity is involved, do not create, replace or alter a VIN outside the lawful manufacturer and authority process.

Ask for the substrate grade, wall thickness where relevant, paint or coating specification, exposure environment and the drawing revision. Confirm whether the mark is a supplementary workshop asset ID or a regulated product identification. If the specification does not say, obtain written clarification before work begins.

Run a representative coating trial

  1. Prepare a coupon from the approved material with a representative finish and surface condition.
  2. Document the pin, marking programme, location and operator; use settings approved by the equipment supplier and engineer.
  3. For pre-paint marking, apply the actual primer, coating thickness and cure cycle to the sample.
  4. For post-paint marking, inspect coating cracks, edge lift and exposed metal; ask the coating specialist whether repair is permissible.
  5. Check readability after normal cleaning and the environmental conditioning relevant to the intended service.
  6. Record photographs, acceptance criteria and the customer decision before production.

For example, a maintenance contractor wants a fleet of painted steel trolley frames numbered. A sample marked before painting remains readable on bare steel but becomes difficult to see after a thick textured finish. The better decision may be a separate stainless service tag fixed to a non-critical bracket, not deeper pin strikes. This is an illustrative decision scenario, not a tested result for any ONAGONE machine.

Legibility is more than character depth

Characters can be unreadable because of poor contrast, uneven support, curvature, glare, paint fill or dirt. A nominally deeper indentation does not automatically solve these problems and can create additional material damage. Set an inspection standard that describes viewing distance, lighting, character size, permitted defects and how the serial number is checked against the job sheet. If machine-readable codes are required, test them with the actual scanner rather than relying on a phone camera.

Where a surface is irregular, a handheld tool can move during marking. Use a stable approved support and follow the manufacturer's operating instructions. Avoid unsupported thin panels and locations that can deflect. Never hold the workpiece by hand in the marking zone. Control noise, vibration and manual handling under the workplace risk assessment.

Choosing a portable marking machine

ONAGONE lists an ML-SC12030A handheld dot-peen metal marking machine at £1,495.76. This listing is a starting point for a supplier enquiry, not proof that it will achieve a particular indentation depth, duty cycle or coating performance. Ask for sample marks on your actual material, the approved marking area, battery and controller details, spare pin availability, training and warranty terms.

What does the extra coating decision cost?

Consider a hypothetical 30-piece service-tag job charged at £24 per accepted tag, excluding VAT. Per-tag illustrative costs are £3.20 blank and fixing, £5.00 labour, £0.20 energy, £1.20 machine depreciation or finance allocation, £1.40 inspection and expected remakes, £1.80 customer acquisition, and £0.40 payment administration. Total cost is £13.20 and contribution is £10.80 before general overhead, tax and any unlisted costs. This is not a real case study or a guaranteed gross-profit figure. If an engineer requires a costly coating trial, quote that setup separately rather than burying it in the unit price. VAT collected does not form part of net revenue; input VAT treatment depends on registration and eligibility.

Stop conditions for the operator

Pause the job if paint cracks beyond the approved zone, the mark is incomplete, the part is unsupported, a new coating batch behaves differently, or the serial record does not match. A customer request to “make it deeper until it shows” is not an acceptable substitute for an approved process. Keep a traceable record of rejected samples and the decision to use a separate tag where necessary.

Frequently asked questions

Will dot-peen always remain visible after powder coating?

No. Coating thickness, flow, colour and character geometry affect legibility. A finished sample is essential.

Can I dot-peen through paint and seal it afterwards?

Only if the responsible coating and engineering authorities approve the method and demonstrate acceptable corrosion performance. Otherwise choose a separate tag.

Does a handheld marker make every site job suitable?

No. Safe access, workpiece support, authorised location and inspection capability still determine suitability.

What about chassis or VIN markings?

Never use a portable marker to alter vehicle identity. Check ownership, original records and the appropriate manufacturer or DVLA route before any identification-related work.
