Moving a SORN Car in the UK: Collection, Transport and Legal Checklist
A car can be declared off the road and still need to move: perhaps you have bought a project vehicle, sold an unwanted car, arranged repairs, changed storage or decided to scrap it. The difficult part is knowing what you can do legally, particularly when it has no tax, no MOT or has been sitting on a driveway for months.
ONAGONE accepts enquiries for planned transport and appropriate vehicle recovery in Rotherham and surrounding South Yorkshire areas. Availability and the safest loading arrangement are assessed before any job is agreed. This guide is about transporting a vehicle safely—not using an off-road declaration as a shortcut to drive an unroadworthy car on public roads.

What does SORN actually mean?
A Statutory Off Road Notification tells DVLA a vehicle is being kept or used off the public road. It is relevant where a vehicle is untaxed or uninsured and is stored off-road, such as on private land, a garage or driveway. A SORN vehicle cannot simply be parked on the street outside the house. DVLA also explains that a SORN is not transferred to a new keeper; a buyer intending to keep the vehicle off-road needs to deal with their own SORN position.
See GOV.UK's official SORN guidance for the current requirements.
Can I drive a SORN car to a garage?
Do not assume the answer is yes merely because it is going for repair. DVLA says a SORN vehicle may only be driven on a public road to or from a pre-booked MOT or other testing appointment. Normal requirements about safe roadworthiness still matter, and separate insurance requirements may apply. A workshop appointment for routine work should not be confused with a pre-booked test. If your vehicle is not lawfully driveable, arrange suitable transport instead.
DVLA warns that public-road use outside the limited permitted circumstances can result in prosecution and substantial fines. Read the official SORN rules before making plans.
How can a SORN car be moved without driving it?
A suitably equipped recovery vehicle or transporter may be able to carry the SORN vehicle to a workshop, storage yard, new owner or authorised treatment facility, depending on its dimensions, condition and the operator's arrangements. The difference is important: loading a car for transport is not permission for the owner to drive it along public roads. The recovery provider must use lawful, appropriate equipment and loading methods.
Give the collector the vehicle's registration and exact pickup and destination postcodes. Explain whether the car starts, rolls, steers and has working brakes. A car with no battery power but free-rolling wheels is a different job from one with seized brakes and locked steering.
Getting a SORN car ready for collection
- Confirm permission and access. If the car is in a shared parking area, rented property, workshop or storage site, arrange safe access and release authorisation before collection.
- Tell the operator what will not work. Missing keys, locked steering, flat tyres, detached suspension and seized wheels may change the equipment required.
- Explain the parking arrangement. A narrow driveway, steep slope, underground garage or gate can prevent normal vehicle loading even when the vehicle is quite small.
- Remove personal possessions. Check the boot, glovebox, under seats and any stored paperwork. Do not remove components that were part of an agreed vehicle valuation without telling the other party.
- Prepare accurate documentation. Have the registration details and evidence of your authority to request transportation; a V5C alone is not proof of legal ownership.
If you are buying a SORN car
Do not rely on the previous keeper's SORN. Before moving or using the vehicle, check the DVLA registration, insurance and tax requirements relevant to your circumstances. If the car is a project and will not be driven, arrange transport that does not require you to drive it on the road. Discuss keys, immobilisers and any missing components with the seller before collection day.
If you are scrapping a SORN vehicle
A car being dismantled or scrapped may have different paperwork requirements from a vehicle sold to another keeper for repair. GOV.UK explains how to notify DVLA about scrapping at an authorised treatment facility and when a Certificate of Destruction applies. The SORN is cancelled when the vehicle is sold, permanently exported or scrapped, but you should still complete the relevant transaction notification.

SORN vehicle transport FAQs
Can ONAGONE move a SORN car that does not start?
You can request an assessment. We need to know whether its wheels and steering work, if keys are available, and whether it is safely accessible. Vehicle transport is not automatically confirmed when the form is submitted.
Does SORN mean I can leave the car on a public road?
No. DVLA says a SORN vehicle must be kept off the public road, such as in a garage, on a driveway or on private land. There may be enforcement consequences if it is left on the road.
Can I drive it to a pre-booked MOT?
There is a limited SORN exception for travel to or from a pre-booked MOT or other testing appointment, but that does not remove the need for the vehicle to be roadworthy and properly insured. Check the official DVLA guidance.
Does a SORN transfer when I buy a car?
No. The new keeper must establish the correct tax or SORN position for their own ownership period.
Can I arrange transport without the V5C?
Discuss the circumstances beforehand. ONAGONE may require alternative information showing that you have authority to arrange transportation. Do not misrepresent ownership.
Can I scrap a car that is declared SORN?
Yes, subject to proper ownership, collection arrangements and end-of-life disposal paperwork. Follow DVLA's rules when reporting the vehicle as scrapped.
Request a SORN car transport assessment
To discuss moving an off-road car from a home, garage, workshop or storage address in Rotherham and the surrounding areas, use the ONAGONE vehicle transport request.
