Free UK MOT history and vehicle details check
Checking a vehicle registration can help you understand the information recorded about a car, van or other eligible UK vehicle before buying, selling, repairing or arranging collection. Use the registration checker above to request available DVLA vehicle details and DVSA MOT test history in one place.
What vehicle details can I check by registration?
Where supplied by the vehicle information services, the checker can display the registration, manufacturer, model, colour, fuel type, year and engine capacity. Some results may also include a recorded vehicle weight. Availability varies according to the vehicle and source records, and a field not shown should not be interpreted as a fault.
What does an MOT history check show?
DVSA MOT history records can show individual test dates, pass or fail outcomes, recorded odometer readings, expiry dates, and the defects or advisories recorded at the time of a test. Open the individual test entries to read the details. Not all vehicles have the same coverage; newer vehicles may not yet require an MOT, while older records may be incomplete.
How to interpret an MOT record
- Test result: a pass or fail reflects the outcome at that test, not the car's current condition.
- Mileage: compare recorded readings across dates to spot unexpected changes, allowing for recorded errors or replacements.
- Advisories: these are items identified by the tester which may need monitoring or repair.
- Major and dangerous defects: investigate these carefully. Do not drive a vehicle in a dangerous condition.
- Gaps in history: a missing record does not automatically mean the vehicle has been clocked, damaged or illegally used.
Checking a used car before buying
Compare the registration lookup results with the advert, VIN, vehicle registration certificate (V5C) and the vehicle itself. Read the MOT test history alongside service records and inspect the vehicle. This tool is not a paid vehicle history report and does not establish outstanding finance, theft status, insurance write-off history or legal ownership. Obtain appropriate additional checks when needed.
MOT failed, repairs expensive or vehicle not running?
An MOT fail can be a useful starting point when deciding whether to repair or dispose of a vehicle. Obtain a proper diagnosis and compare repair costs with the vehicle's value. Explore our repair or scrap guide, non-running scrap car advice, or scrap car collection service. For a vehicle that needs moving, see our vehicle transport information.
Frequently asked questions
Is the MOT history check free?
Yes. The ONAGONE registration checker is available without a charge for the lookup. Results depend on the availability and response of the underlying vehicle information services.
Do I need the registration number?
Yes. Enter the UK number plate in the checker. Spaces are optional. Make sure the characters are correct before submitting.
Can I see past MOT failures and advisories?
Where DVSA test history is returned, open a test entry to view the recorded defects and advisory items associated with it.
Can I check vehicle tax, insurance or finance?
This checker focuses on available vehicle details and MOT test history. It should not be relied upon as a tax status service, an insurance database check, a finance check or a stolen-vehicle check.
Does an MOT pass mean a car is safe to drive?
No. An MOT pass describes the test result on a specific date. A vehicle's mechanical condition can change, and you should make your own safety assessment.
Why does a vehicle have no MOT test history?
It may be too new to need an MOT, have a record type not returned by the service, or have unavailable or incomplete records. Check the registration and consult official records if you need confirmation.
Does ONAGONE provide a free valuation with the MOT check?
The vehicle-information lookup is separate from our scrap-car quotation service. For an offer to sell a complete end-of-life vehicle in our operating area, visit Scrap My Car.
